While it is possible to paint a door while it is still on the hinges it does seem to slow the process down. We have found that it is easier to remove the door and take it either to the garage or outside where the chance for paint messes are less. It is also easier to prepare and area for painting then bring the doors to that area than it is to prepare the area around the door.
